Happy Sunday everyone,
I have been listening to a lot of Jordan Peterson’s older content recently and I have a far better understanding now than when I was 17, when I listened first time around.
One of his most popular quotes involves telling young people to tidy their bedrooms first thing in the morning.
Although the advice may seem simple, most people miss the the deeper meaning behind it.
It is more than just having a tidy room
You must take care of your own immediate environment FIRST before you start moving on to bigger challenges.
If you can’t even tidy the space you live in, you are going to have trouble when faced with more demanding challenges.
This is about making sure that you are consistently on top of the things you can control.
If we make sure we are dialled in on that in which we can control, it makes facing adversity far easier.
Also, who ever feels WORSE after tidying their room?
The Multiplier Effect
If you want to change the world, you have to begin to change yourself first.
Great change comes on the micro, individual level as well as the macro, societal level.
As individuals, if we all seek to become better then we have a positive impact on those closest to us.
This positive impact spreads person by person until an entire network of people have been positively impacted, just from one person getting their act together.
You become an example to those around you.
Chaos and Order
In Peterson’s book ‘12 Rules for Life’, he refers to the state of chaos and order throughout almost all of the book.
Life is a constant cycle of chaos and order, which embody many different aspects of human existence.
The economy, the tide, the 4 seasons or day and night.
We can observe this pattern in the natural environment and the environment that humans have constructed.
It always follows this pattern of flowing between states.
Making your bed first thing in the morning immediately puts you in a state or order, as opposed to a state of chaos.
Your Actionable Takeaway
This week, focus on increasing your awareness and maintaining a state of order.
Tidy your room and make sure you dial in on the things you can control.
You have potential to change your entire environment for the better.
Don’t waste it.
See you soon,
