New Years Resolutions
Happy New Year!
Myself and Jacob are super excited for the year that lies ahead- we hope you are excited too!
As it is a New Year, you may have set yourself some New Year’s Resolutions, which is great!
I found great success last year from making resolutions but maintaining them can be easier said than done.
For the sake of simplicity, I’ll be using the examples of decreased alcohol consumption and increased fitness because they are the two main New Year’s Resolutions
Don’t Make A Resolution, Make A Promise
If you had a friend that didn’t turn up every time you agreed to meet with them, you would start losing trust with them after a while.
Yet, we often don’t show up for the promises we make to ourselves.
The trust you have in yourself is so valuable and building that trust up with smaller promises will give you confidence to follow through on bigger ones in the future.
For example, if one of your resolutions is fitness-related, just show up to the gym.
You might not always have the best session but doing something is always better than doing nothing.
You reaffirm it as part of your culture and your identity.
You prove to yourself that you are the kind of person who goes to the gym, even when you don’t feel like it.
Don’t Just Eliminate Something, Replace It
Don’t add or subtract habits - swap them.
This will probably happen naturally anyway but if you make a conscious choice to swap for the better, you’ll be more likely to stick to it.
For example, if you are someone who wants to do ‘Dry January’, plan ahead and make sure you fill those weekends with activities that don’t involve alcohol.
You’ll find it much easier to resist the temptation to wander down to the pub if you have plans already!
Make It Easy For Yourself
If you want to start training more, get a membership to a gym that’s close to your house.
If you want to improve your diet, don’t buy the foods that you are trying to avoid.
If you want to reduce your alcohol consumption, don’t put yourself in environments that increase the chances of you drinking.
It might sound simple but it will massively increase your chances of sticking to your resolutions.
Last But Not Least…
Enjoy the process!
Sticking to new habits can be hard and challenging but it’ll be even more challenging if you view them as a burden.
It’s likely that the resolutions you’ve chosen will make you smarter, happier or healthier.
Don’t view them as chores but embrace them instead.
If you maintain a positive outlook on it, you’ll be more likely to enjoy and repeat the rewarding behaviour.
