The other day, I was thinking about the overload of information we are exposed to every single day through social media platforms.
Every time you open your phone you are flooded with shorts, tweets, videos, books, courses, training, advice and everything else you can think of.
Before I go on, I want to say that I am also guilty of overconsumption. This is not a lecture but something I have been thinking about.
Producing this newsletter right now is part of what I am going to talk about.
All of this information that is being poured into your brain is going to have an impact on the way that you see things.
In this edition of the Progressus Newsletter, I want to talk about why it is important to listen to yourself as well as other people, especially the people you see on the internet.
A Lot Of Our Opinions Are Not Ours
Over the past year, I have consumed a hefty amount of self-help books and watched YouTube videos from all of the big entrepreneurs or coaches.
I began to realise that a lot of the things I was saying and thinking were not actually opinions of my own, but the opinions of others that I (kind of) agreed with.
I caught myself sometimes just regurgitating something I had heard in a podcast rather than formulating my own opinion on the subject.
There were also many occasions where I asked myself “Do you even really believe that?” and a lot of the time, the answer was a no!
Is this always a bad thing?
No - absolutely not.
We live in an age now where you can access the thoughts of some of the greatest thinkers alive right now at the click of a button.
But even these people are human beings and are not right about everything.
Take their ideas as inspiration but create a mental filter to run it through, don’t just let it seep straight in.
What Do You Think?
The only person who knows what you truly think or feel is you.
Sometimes, it can be hard to express your true thoughts out loud and it can be easier to go along with the words of others.
But it is important to formulate your own opinions on things because it will help you understand who you are and it will give you confidence when you begin to speak.
If you begin to say the things that are on your mind, you will speak with more conviction and you will articulate your ideas more clearly.
You’ll find that people will listen to what you have to say because you are authentic.
Conclusion
Thinking for yourself is a difficult skill to master.
In order to think critically about things, you have to be prepared to be wrong which can be hard sometimes.
But if you are never wrong, you’ll never learn.
And if you never learn, you’ll never grow.
