I wrote down this quote from Naval Ravikant when I listened to his podcast with Joe Rogan a few months back and I thought it was really powerful.
“A desire is a contract you sign with yourself and you agree that you won’t be happy until you get the thing.”
You don’t find long lasting happiness in buying the car, the watch or the house you have always wanted. You don’t find long lasting happiness in hitting your profit goal or getting the promotion you have had your eye on.
Why?
These things on their own will not make you happy. Somebody could give you that watch or that car right now and it you would feel awkward after a while because you have you haven’t earned it.
How The Elite View Desires
Manchester City won the Premier League earlier this year, they celebrated for one night and turned their attention straight to preparing for the FA Cup Final. Once they won the FA Cup, they celebrated for a night and then they focused on the Champions League Final. After they won the biggest three trophies in club football, they celebrated for a few weeks and then it’s back to preparing for next season.
Every one of those players will have dreamed of lifting those trophies. However, it isn’t the trophy that makes them happy. It’s all of the games in that campaign, all the goals and all the training sessions that make it special.
The Journey Is The Best Part
Reaching a goal or fulfilling a desire will always give you a temporary feeling of triumph but just like Manchester City, you just end up setting an even bigger goal and start chasing that!
That is one of the most beautiful things about life: we can never stop getting better. There will always be a bigger goal for us to go after.
So, the antidote to feeling unfulfilled and the prescription to finding true meaning is to enjoy the journey and make sure that you appreciate and are grateful for what you have in the present.
