I have been thinking about the strong correlation between entrepreneurship and self-development.
Self-improvement creators almost always run their own businesses or do some sort of freelance work.
You very rarely see creators on Instagram, TikTok or Twitter who work for a company and also post about self-improvement.
I wanted to figure out why this might be the case.
‘Business is a self-improvement vehicle designed as a money-making opportunity’
That is a James Clear quote from 2020 and summarises it well.
People who become entrepreneurs usually do so because they want to take more control over how they use their time & their income.
However, it isn’t just time and income they end up controlling.
They end up taking a firmer grip on their entire life.
Business demands you to be more creative, to be able to communicate effectively, and to continuously improve skills and time management (just to name a few).
Business Exposes Your Weaknesses
If you lack knowledge or skills, the best way to find it out quickly is in business.
The reason business exposes weaknesses so quickly is because you have quantitative data that you can’t argue against, especially if you are a solopreneur.
If the business isn’t doing well in certain areas, whether that be sales or marketing, there will be a reason behind it and it will typically be a weakness.
Value & Perception Of Self Worth
As I mentioned earlier, entrepreneurs choose not to let somebody else dictate how their time is spent and how much income they make.
This could also be another reason why self-development is so closely tied to it.
As you begin to value yourself in these areas more, you begin to value other areas like your fitness and well-being.
